About

How to Creative was founded by Felix Kruip, a digital creator with a passion for beautiful technology and a desire to teach others online to start creating.

How to Creative is still a one-man team, so let’s continue to talk in the first person, because you probably know it’s me. Let me tell you how it all started.

Growing up, my dad took me on a business trip to New York City; the city of dreams. He took me to many gadget stores where I saw the first flying drone and the Apple store on 5th Avenue; the glass cube. These experiences sparked my love for tech which became a shared passion with my dad.

When I returned home to my childhood farmhouse in the countryside of the Netherlands, my mom turned my bedroom into New York City and my dad build me a desktop pc. Little did I know that I would spend most of my time watching YouTube and learning how to create anything I could imagine using a computer.

My friends at school taught me music production software, so we could make music together. And I learned Photoshop to make a logo. My best friend, who lived on the other side of the country, would visit once a year. One time he brought his new camera and showed me what you can do with After Effects. We started making movies together and editing them using Premiere Pro.

After finishing high school, I went on a gap year. While floating in the sea somewhere along the south coast of Thailand, I thought to myself: I have only been filming this entire journey I think I want to do YouTube for a living.

Back to reality, I believed I needed a “real” career and settled on the idea of becoming an international film director. I looked on Google and landed on the best university which happened to be in the Netherlands. Surprisingly enough, my best friend was already following this exact study program. I moved to the other side of the Netherlands to attend the ‘International Media and Entertainment Management University. I moved in with my best friend, and we started our small video production company. At that time, he still had his first camera, and I got a GoPro. No gear, but big dreams.

After doing a few gigs, I was humbled but learned a lot. After doing a few more gigs and saving up, I was able to buy my dream camera (at that time); a second-hand Canon 70D. Shortly after, we invested in a drone; the new DJI Phantom 4. Little Felix would not have believed his eyes, but I crashed it on the first test flight. Only the props were completely trashed, but luckily, they could easily be replaced.

Fast forward, after working with some of the largest companies in the Netherlands, my friend decided he didn’t want to be a part of the video production company anymore. Shortly after that, I landed the biggest gig ever and I had to graduate in a few months at the same time. Then the pandemic hit. It felt like everything was set on pause, but I still had to graduate with my business plan.

After struggling for a while, I remembered my epiphany in the sea in Thailand and decided I could turn YouTube into a business. Looking back, the idea was simple: tech for creators. I graduated cum laude from my university and reached the first thousand subscribers on YouTube. Not long after I reached out to Aputure and landed my first big sponsor that believed in my vision.

Ten-thousands of subscribers and millions of views later, I had worked with my dream businesses for YouTube, including RØDE, Logitech, and more. I want to continue to help people create better digital products.

If I had learned something, it’s that being inspired by someone somewhere in the world can mean a lot and potentially change someone’s life, just like it did mine. Because of my passion for tech, and creating digitally, I want to help others that want to start today.

The ultimate vision is to turn this one-man team into a beautiful studio with a creative crew that has very different disciplines but could still work together and inspire each other and the world to make beautiful content online about tech and pursuing your creative journey and potentially turning it into a career.

The name stands for a lifestyle of following your passion and turning your creative journey into a lifetime career. ‘How to’ are the first two English words I learned as a kid to learn anything on YouTube and ‘creative’ stands for the ultimate end goal: to create.
